Baxi Boiler Reviews 2021

Baxi is a significant and well-established UK manufacturer of high-quality, reliable boilers founded in 1866 and currently headquartered in Warwick.

Their main aim is to deliver value-for-money heating equipment to homeowners and businesses which are both reliable and energy efficient alongside providing quality customer service with environmental sustainability

If you need to upgrade your boiler or require a new system, you have three options. You can choose from a system boiler, a regular boiler, or combi-boiler.

Both system and regular boilers require a lot of space within your property to house the storage facilities for the hot water they produce.

Combi boilers, on the other hand, heat water almost instantly as it passes through the equipment and they are much smaller, wall-hanging units.

Gas combi-boilers are generally best for most residences because they are energy-efficient and reduce your environmental footprint as well as being cheaper to run and taking up less physical space.

In this review of Baxi gas combi boilers in 2021, we’ll cover:

  • who Baxi is
  • what a combi boiler is
  • the key stats you need to know about combi boilers and what they mean

Who is Baxi?

Baxi belongs to the massive BDR Thermea group, a company which specialises in domestic and commercial space and water heating solutions.

It is one of Britain’s largest privately-owned companies.

Originally established in 1866 in Lancashire by Richard Baxendale, the company has been involved in the development of many pioneering boiler advances we take for granted today over the past 150 years.

Today, they have a strong push towards environmentally-friendly heating solutions.

The UK Baxi factory is located in Preston whereas the customer call centre and head office is currently in Warwick.

Over 6,000 calls a day are taken on average by the call centre and they also offer advice through user comments on Trustpilot.

What is a combi boiler?

A combi-boiler heats water as it passes through the boiler directly from your mains supply.

When you turn on the hot tap or the heating, the internal gas burner is ignited and a heat exchanger heats up the water.

This means you get hot water almost instantly without having to wait.

Compared to regular boilers or system boilers, combi-boilers are much more efficient in both the running costs they incur and the amount of energy they use.

Nearly all models now feature a higher energy efficiency rating and, because of their size, they’re ideal for smaller properties because they are mostly small, wall-hung units.

There’s no need for an extra storage tank of water so it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a loft or excess space.

You can even mount your combi boiler inside a kitchen cabinet so it’s extremely discreet and fits in with your interior design.

Combi boilers are usually cheaper to install as you don’t need extra pipes for water tanks and as they don’t require pipework in the loft or outside, there is no worry of the pipes freezing over in cold weather.

Baxi currently have 20 different combi boilers on the market and we have compiled a list of our top ten below for your information.

Key combi boiler stats

There are three main factors to think about when you’re choosing your new boiler – the flow rate, the output and the energy efficiency rating.

These three elements need to be correct for your property size and hot water needs to make sure you get the most out of your boiler for the lowest annual cost.

Combi boiler flow rate

This tells you how many litres of water will come out the hot tap and into your radiators within one minute.

It’s like a gauge to let you know how much water you can get in a certain amount of time.

The higher the flow rate, the more hot water you can get and at a quicker speed.

It’s important to note that flow rate is also dependent on the amount of water your mains supply provides your property.

For example, even if your boiler has a flow rate of 12 litres per minute, the maximum flow rate will be 10lpm if your mains supply has a limit of 10 litres per minute.

Combi boiler output

The boiler output tells you how much energy it uses and how much it will cost you.

If you have a boiler with an output of 25kW and a unit of gas is 4p, your equation will be 25 x £0.04 = £1.00.

It’s important to choose the right output for your needs so you balance the power of the boiler with your actual heating and hot water requirements.

Too high of an output means you’ll consume more power than you need so your bill will be too high for your size of property.

Conversely, if you choose a boiler with too low an output rate, you won’t get the power required for your property size and the water may not be particularly hot when it comes out of your taps.

Combi boiler energy efficiency rating

This refers to the percentage of power used by the boiler to heat the water required for hot running water and for heating compared to how much energy the boiler uses itself to do the job correctly

For example, if a boiler is 96% efficient, 96% of the energy it uses goes directly towards heating the water and the remaining 4% is ‘lost’ energy that the boiler has used up itself.

The more efficient a boiler is, the lower your energy bill will be.

If you have a boiler which is only 70% efficient, you are paying extra money for the same amount of heat which a more efficient boiler could provide for a cheaper cost.

As with all domestic appliances like fridges and kettles, boilers have efficiency ratings of A – G, with A being over 90% efficient and the most economical to run.

Baxi’s top ten gas combi boilers

There are currently 20 different Baxi combi boilers on the market.

Here at HomeSage, we have created our own unique scoring system for each boiler available. We have based our rankings on:

  • the efficiency rating,
  • the type of fuel (because gas is the cheapest, gas boilers get the maximum score),
  • the length of their warranty, and
  • genuine Trustpilot reviews – we take into consideration the number of reviews and the average score.

According to our HomeSage ranking system, our top ten Baxi boilers are as follows:

The guarantee period and after-sales service

boiler after care service
Credit: Worcester Bosch

As with most boilers, you need to register your product within 30 days of installation with Baxi.

As long as your boiler is serviced annually by a Gas Safe engineer and you have the correct commissioning paperwork, Baxi offer warranties of up to 10 years for their boilers depending on the model.

Here, we have compiled a list of recent Trustpilot reviews that specifically mention the Baxi after sales service.

  • On the 23rd June 2020, JimH reviewed “I’ve had the Baxi boiler care package for 3 years since my boiler developed a fault around Christmas time (no heating in December with Christmas around the corner wasn’t great). Baxi fixed the problem quickly and has maintained it ever since. The included annual service gives me peace of mind and the engineers are always quick, helpful and tidy. Very happy with the service.”
  • Paul Hodgson wrote “The technician was very knowledgeable and carried out a very good deep service, which other engineers had not done. The service as normal was very good, this is why I have used Baxi for 14 years now’ on the 23rd June 2020.”
  • Sean Pennicott reviewed that “The tank that came with the boiler developed a leak while only 5 years old and regularly serviced, tried to contact the company in December 2019. I got a response in April 2020. Meanwhile I had to pay for a new boiler and cancel the holiday as I couldn’t afford it. Advised me to start the complaints process which was a total waste of our time and all they did was continually ask for the same details over and over. Highly recommend this company is avoided where possible.”
