Are you thinking of upgrading your boiler? If so, you need to choose from the three types available – but you should definitely get expert advice before making a decision. That’s why we’re here!

A regular or a system boiler both require extra storage facilities to house the water storage tanks and they can be more expensive to run and install.

Combi-boilers are recommended for most properties in the UK because they’re much smaller in size, they help save money on your gas bills, and they’re now much more environmentally friendly

In this review of Viessmann gas combi boilers in 2021, we’ll cover:

  • who Viessmann is
  • what a combi boiler is
  • the key stats you need to know about combi boilers and what they mean
  • the top 10 Viessmann boilers according to HomeSage’s exclusive grading guide
  • Viessmann vs other manufacturers – what do customers think?
  • Viessmann’s top 5 gas combi boilers up to 27kw
  • Viessmann’s range of three gas combi boilers from 28kw to 34kw
  • Viessmann’s range of five gas combi boilers with 35kw+ output

In this article, we’ve scored each of the top ten gas combi-boilers from Viessmann according to our exclusive online grading guide.

Who are Viessmann?

Viessmann is a truly international heating technology company and they employ over 12,000 people worldwide.

They are headquartered in Germany and the firm has been family-owned for over 4 generations.

They are dedicated to environmental sustainability alongside engineering innovation and celebrating the people they work with.

They have a wide range of heating solutions and provide services for both domestic and industrial use.

They are dedicated to education in the heating and HVAC sector.

The Viessmann Academy is located in Allendorf, Germany, and provides a comprehensive programme of training courses for over 92,000 industry specialists each year.

What is a combi boiler?

A combi boiler provides your property with hot water and heating almost instantly directly drawn from the mains water source and pumped to your hot taps and radiators.

When you turn the hot tap or heating on, the water you require is immediately heated by an internal gas-ignited heat exchanger.

This means that you have hot water whenever you need it without waiting for it to heat up.

Combi boilers are the most popular choice for UK properties because they are relatively small compared to regular or storage boilers, they don’t require extra space for storage tanks, and there is no need for additional pipework (unless you are moving your boiler to a new location in your property).

Because there are so many variations of combi boilers on the market today – Viessmann currently have 15 models to choose from – you can select a solution to suit the size of your property you live in and your family’s heating and hot water needs.

Getting the right boiler means your gas bills will be as low as possible and you won’t waste energy that adds to your environmental footprint.

Key combi boiler stats

The best boiler for your property depends on how many radiators you have and the level of hot water you and your family members require.

The more hot water you think you will need, the higher the output and water flow needs to be, too.

Combi boiler flow rate

The flow rate refers to the amount of water that can be warmed as it passes through the heat exchanger.

If your boiler has a water flow rate of 11 litres per minute, that is the maximum amount of hot water the boiler can produce on demand as long as the mains water supply will allow it.

What does that mean?

If the mains water supply only has a limit of 10 litres per minute, no matter what your boiler flow rate is, the maximum amount you can get is still 10 litres per minute.

Combi boiler output

The boiler output refers to the amount of energy the boiler uses to perform.

It is measured in kW and it tells you how much it will cost to run your boiler.

To work it out, you take the output rate and multiply it by the price of a unit of gas.

For example, if your boiler has an output of 40kW and a unit of gas is 4p, the equation is 40 x 4p which equals £1.40.

It’s necessary to know the boiler output not just for working out the cost but to make sure you get the right power level for your needs.

If you have a boiler with an output too high for the size of your property you will end up paying more money than you need to pay on your gas bills.

If the output is too low, you will struggle to get enough hot water for your requirements.

Combi boiler energy efficiency rating

The energy efficient rating for boilers is worked out on how much energy it takes to heat the water compared to ‘lost’ energy used by the boiler itself.

If a boiler is 95% efficient, only 5% is lost on the boiler.

If a boiler only has an efficiency of 60%, that’s a staggering 40% energy loss which is not only very inefficient but will cost you more money and isn’t great for the environment.

Much like fridges and washing machines, boilers are rated on their energy efficiency on a grading system of ‘A’ to ‘G’, with ‘A’ being the most effective of over 90%.

Most modern combi-boilers are usually either grade ‘A’ or ‘B’, which both offer increased cost-savings compared to less efficient systems.

How HomeSage’s Rating System Works

To make it simple for you to make an informed choice, here at HomeSage we have devised a unique online ranking system that identifies the benefits of each model.

  • We rank boilers based the type of fuel the boiler uses (as gas is the cheapest option by far, each gas boiler gets a maximum score for this automatically),
  • the length of the guarantee,
  • the energy efficiency rating, and
  • genuine customer reviews and average ratings from Trustpilot.

“Had the Vitodens 100W boiler fitted by iHeat a few days ago as my old boiler was about to die. Modern, quiet and improved hot water throughout. Not needed to use the heating yet but all straightforward. Very impressed with the iHeat booking and installing system. Engineer was a 10-year British Gas veteran. All warranty paperwork sent through swiftly. Boiler had a Which Best Buy and the 10 year warranty was a definite selling point for me. Very happy with it.’

Boiler is a vast improvement to our previous boiler. Noticeable difference in terms of output and effectiveness and far more efficient.”

Poor boilers and hard to get the right parts, booklet has several gas council numbers and none help get the parts some cannot be used with Nest or Hive due to built-in external air sensor and so many sensors fitted in series. Technical were no help and advised replacing the control board on a 9 year old boiler at a cost of £450.”

The guarantee period and after-sales service

Viessmann offers a standard 2-year guarantee for all boilers whichcovers either fixing or replacing any manufacturer production faults or material defects free of charge.

Depending on what boiler you opt for, you may also receive a comprehensive 5-year parts and labour warranty.

You also have the option to extend this providing the services and repairs are carried out by a Viessmann Trained Installer.

Below, we present a small sample of recent user comments covering their experiences with the Viessmann warranty and after sales service.

On the 7th June 2020, Lorraine reviewed:

“Our Viessmann boiler developed a leak last week, we contacted the company who installed it and they were closed due to the Corona-virus lock-down. We managed to work out that the boiler was still under warranty so called the Viessmann customer service line.

The service we received was excellent, they confirmed that the boiler was still under warranty, and that an engineer would be with us the following day. The engineer called us to confirm our address details, discuss our problems, and said he would be with us by 9am the next morning.

He arrived a few minutes early and had brought everything he needed to repair our leaking boiler. Many thanks to all the UK staff who helped in these difficult times.”

On the 18th May 2020, Phil from Essex stated he:

Couldn’t fault anything. Great service, great fitting, great boiler!!

On the 25th January 2020, Darren Rickard wrote:

‘A full 2 weeks now of waiting for answers on technical queries. Viessmann has my email and my contact number, some of the queries were raised 6 months ago! Assistance is non existent, especially in my area.’

Save up to 54% on your new gas combi boiler

You can save up to 54% of the cost of the supply and the installation of your new boiler by leaving your details with us at any of the forms on this page.

We will contact three or four local, trusted and Gas Safe regulated engineers with your query who will get in touch with you for a free quote and relevant advice.

Our service is completely free for you and it is no obligation – there is no pressure to accept any of the offers from our partner installers if you decide not to go ahead. If you do, then great – you could save hundreds of pounds!

Still unsure of what type of boiler, from what manufacturer, is best for you? Why not check out our other post on the best boilers in 2021 or the HomeSage Advice Hub for more info!
